Local Foods Review + an AMAZING Giveaway

Happy Tuesday! We are continuing our series of reviewing some of our favorite local Houston restaurants! In the past, we have reviewed Caracol, Dish Society and Adair Kitchen, and today, we are focusing on one of my absolute favorite places in the city — Local Foods! If you have never been to this restaurant, you need to RUN there for your next meal. It is SO GOOD! Plus, I’m in love with their decor!

Keep reading through this blog post to see how to enter our incredible giveaway. Local Foods was so generous to provide TWO gift certificates to give away to our readers – each certificate covers dinner for four ($100 value) at their Tanglewood location.

Local Foods has four locations throughout the city of Houston that all focus on food that is locally sourced. In fact, you can view the list of where the restaurant obtains their local ingredients from online. The quality of the food is so good and you can really taste the freshness in everything you eat. Every menu item that I have tried at Local Foods has been delicious – it’s honestly so hard to pick what to eat when we go because I have so many favorites.

Not only would I consider Local Foods to be healthy because of its focus on local ingredients, but because of the variety of menu options that support a healthy lifestyle. From quinoa burgers to gourmet sides that are fresh and full of nutrients to sandwiches that can be prepared as salads, you really cannot go wrong with what you order. And, for those who follow specific diets (vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, etc) there are a variety of options for you to choose from. The staff is extremely willing to make special accommodations to fit your needs. My all time favorite dish at Local Foods is their Crunchy Chicken Sandwich. It is seriously delicious! My mouth might be watering right now thinking of it…

Crested Butte Recap + Green Chile Egg Casserole

We just returned from a trip to Crested Butte, Colorado. Our family plans an annual ski trip each year, but this year was a special trip to celebrate my dad’s 60th birthday, and our first time to Crested Butte (well actually we have been before, but its been 25 years…I was 3 years old on our last trip). We had a large group of my cousins, siblings and in laws staying together in a big house, a couple of minutes from the base of the ski area. To recap the trip, I wanted to share some of the highlights from the trip! I loved this little town and ski area, and can’t wait to go back again!

Quick Bites: McAlister’s Deli

McAlister’s Deli is up next for our continued Quick Bites series! This chain, found across the U.S., has a variety of menu options. But, don’t let the word ‘deli’ in the name trick you, as there are quite a few options on the menu that should be avoided! The ‘choose 2’ menu option is an easy way to have 2 smaller portions of items to make up a healthier meal. For instance, you could have a ‘choose 2 meal’ of the deli turkey sandwich and cup of Fire Roasted Vegetable soup for a meal under 300 calories and 1 gram saturated fat. But, as we have learned, it is important to review the nutritional facts of any dining establishment before eating there. In this case, it would be easy to pick a ‘choose 2 meal’ containing over 1,000 calories just by choosing the smaller portion of the muffuletta! I have broken down menu items to choose and those to avoid, but as always, there are menu items that may be acceptable that I have not discussed. For a breakdown of what nutrients we look at, take a look at our original Quick Bites post on Chick-fil-a.

Quick Bites: Zoe’s Kitchen

We are back with another edition of our Quick Bites series, and today, we are looking at one of my favorite places to eat – Zoe’s Kitchen! I love the focus on healthy eating at Zoe’s Kitchen as well as the variety of options. In fact, Zoe’s provides a speciality menu called ‘Simply 500’ which lists the menu items that are already 500 calories or less or those that can be specially ordered to qualify. Also, for those people following specific diets (such as vegetarian, gluten free or vegan), the menu labels which menu items qualify making it easy to decide what to order! I wanted to narrow down the menu even further by taking a look at some of the other nutrients that play a role into what we would consider a healthier meal. As always, there are menu items that may be acceptable that I have not discussed. For a breakdown of what nutrients we look at, take a look at our original Quick Bites post on Chick-fil-a.

Quick Bites: Panera Bread

We are back with another installment of our Quick Bites series. Today, we are looking into Panera Bread. Known for its focus on all natural “clean” ingredients and having a transparent menu, it is a popular restaurant for those wanting to choose healthier options when eating out. I appreciate Panera Bread’s focus on removing artificial ingredients, sweeteners, coloring, and flavors to provide more wholesome food. But, just as we have learned by reviewing other places, it is still important to analyze the menu to determine the healthier options. As dietitians, our goal is to provide you the tools to make more informed decisions when eating out!
