Product Review: Healthier Soda Alternatives

About a week and a half ago, I spent the evening with the Texas A&M Aggie Dance Team talking about nutrition and healthy eating. I always love the time I spend with them. I know from my time on the team during college how important fueling your body with proper nutrition is. One of my favorite parts of meeting with them is the questions they have for me. And, one of the most popular questions I received this year was regarding healthier soda alternatives.

This actually wasn’t the first time I had been asked this question – so much so that I figured I needed to write a post about it on HBH! For me, I love the fizziness that the carbonation in soda provides. And, if I can find a good alternative to soda that gives me that same feeling AND tastes good, then I consider it a win! I have tried quite a few options on the market. Some soda alternatives have great flavor, but others really have no appeal to me. I would rather just drink plain water if I’m being honest. But, I wanted to share a few of my favorites and how I decide what alternatives are better for me than others! When looking for the best soda alternatives, focus on products that are sugar (and ideally artificial sugar) free, calorie free and naturally flavored for a healthier product.

Sparkling water – La Croix or Perrier

With sparkling water, I find that you sometimes have to add a squeeze of lime or fresh fruit for extra flavor. But, this also gives you a lot of flexibility with flavors you can experiment with! In fact, you could even infuse fruit in plain sparkling water to create your own soda. For pre-flavored sparkling water options, La Croix and Perrier are both some of my favorites because they are naturally flavored and sugar free. One of my favorite flavors is the La Croix Passion Fruit. I definitely recommend trying it!

Sparkling ICE beverages

ICE beverages are becoming very popular on the market! You will see a variety of flavors available, but the Essence line is my favorite. It contains no dyes or additives that other soda alternatives may contain. ICE also has a line of their flavored sparkling waters that contain a small amount of juice but are calorie free. They tend to have a stronger flavor than La Croix or Perrier – perfect for someone trying to transition away from soda!

Kombucha

Although many of the Kombucha drinks on the market contain a small amount of sugar and calories, the health benefits of this drink make it one to consider! Kombucha is made by combining tea, sugars and sometimes fruit juice with a culture of bacteria or yeast, essentially creating fermented tea. Kombucha is highly acidic and contains B vitamins as well as antioxidants; however, it is likely most famous for its probiotic content. Its flavor is typically a tart/sweet mix with a bubbly taste similar to soda. One of our local Houston Kombucha companies, Kickin Kombucha, has some great flavors to choose from! With 30 calories and 7 grams carbohydrate per serving as well as a variety of vitamins and minerals, this is a tasty and healthier alternative to soda.

Izze Beverage

Although they have more grams of sugar than other soda alternatives, Izze Beverages have great flavor and are a refreshing alternative to soda. An 8 oz serving (like the Clementine flavor) is made up of fruit juice and sparkling water and provides 90 calories, 19 grams sugar. For someone who has tried other sparkling soda options without any luck, try subbing out your regular soda for this one!
