Favorites at Trader Joe’s: Part 1

Trader Joe’s is – hands down- one of my favorite places to shop; I could spend hours in there! With locations around the country, the chain is known for keeping costs low by using their own packaging. But, my favorite part of the store is their focus on health without shoppers having to pay a premium. Whether you are following a specific diet or looking to make some healthy changes to your diet, there are many items that are not only healthy but are tasty. We wanted to share a few of our favorite items at Trader Joe’s, hoping that it will help you navigate the store next time you are shopping there!

  • Pre cut produce

When I’m cooking dinner and don’t have much time, precut vegetables and fruit allow me to prepare a healthy meal in a shorter amount of time. I love the variety of ready to eat produce at TJ’s – kale (as well as other lettuce), butternut squash, pomegranate seeds, beans, sweet potatoes, onions, etc. And, the prices are generally lower than other stores!

  • Whole wheat pita bread and Sprouted 7 grain bread

Looking for a way to spruce up your bread options? Try out some of our favorites at TJ’s! Stuff your whole wheat pita bread with hummus and veggies for a vegetarian option or use the fiber and protein filled sprouted 7 grain bread for toast in the morning with Trader Joe’s almond butter.

  • Salsa

If you can’t make salsa at home, Trader Joe’s version is definitely the next best thing! Unlike salsa options at a typical grocery store, TJ’s salsa is full of nutrient dense veggies and lacks hidden ingredients like preservatives. They also have a variety of flavors that pair well with different meals and entrees. Try the Peach Salsa for a unique flavor!

  • Hummus

Hummus is a nutrient dense food item that can be eaten as a snack (such as with vegetables or pita chips) or used as the protein in a meal. I am picky about the taste of pre-packaged hummus and all of the TJ’s options I have tried have great flavor! My favorite is the roasted red pepper.

  • Spinach and Kale Greek Yogurt Dip

Compared to other cream dips available at the store or even those that are homemade, this is a healthy way to cut calories and fat without sacrificing taste! If you are looking for a snack or need a way to increase your daily vegetable intake, this greek yogurt dip is a great option.

  • Nuts and dried fruit

After our trip to Hawaii, I have been in the mood for tropical fruits. But, it’s a little difficult to eat these fruits in the middle of winter! Instead, I have been choosing dried tropical fruits and nuts from Trader Joe’s to make my own trail mix. This has been the perfect snack when I get hungry in the afternoon!

  • Quinoa

Quinoa can be a pricey purchase but not at Trader Joe’s! I love the ability to choose from different colors of quinoa such as black, white, red or tricolor. Although the nutritional makeup is not different, the type of quinoa you use can vary by recipe or your preference. Quinoa is a great gluten free staple to prep on Sunday and eat off of for the week. Some of our favorite recipes are our Quinoa Greek Salad, Quinoa Fried Rice and Quinoa Broccoli Bites.

  • Frozen Organic brown rice

This is one of my ‘must buy’ products every time I shop at Trader Joe’s. Found in the freezer section, this product makes lunch or dinner time SO easy!  Each packet cooks in 3 minutes in the microwave and serves 2-3 people. I feel like this rice is just as tasty but much quicker to cook, making it an ideal product to always keep in my freezer! And, by choosing brown rice, I am getting a grain full of fiber that will keep me fuller for longer.

We will back soon with 7 more Trader Joe’s favorites! Talk to us – what are some of yours?

Love TJs too!!! My faves are their spicy black bean dip, (frozen) kale Parmesan bites, all of their prepared salads, zucchini fries, and bagged frozen risotto with spinach and carrots! Too many to name! But love your suggestions!
