Caracol review + Giveaway!

My husband and I both enjoy trying new restaurants and experiencing a variety of cuisines from around the world. And, we live in the perfect city for doing so. In fact, Travel and Leisure just ranked Houston as the #1 city in the United States for foodies (source). But, just because a healthy lifestyle is followed, does not mean a sacrifice for delicious food has to be made. In this new series, we will highlight restaurants around our city that are healthy yet delicious!

Caracol has been on my list of restaurants to try for a while, so my husband and I decided to celebrate our 4 year wedding anniversary there. Caracol is in the same family of restaurants as Backstreet Cafe, Hugo’s, Prego and Trevisio, so we knew we were in for a treat. Not to mention, many of our friends had recommended it for the flavorful offerings and ambiance. Caracol’s menu is described as ‘Mexican Coastal Cuisine’ and its variety of tapas, entrees and sides made for a wonderful experience!

First, we started with ceviche- the Petalos de Huachinango – which was a mix of red snapper, tangerine and cucumber. Oh.my.goodness – my taste buds exploded! If you go to Caracol, you MUST order one of their ceviches.  It was incredible!

Next, we received our entrees and were very impressed! I had the Pescado Zarandeado which included the fish of the day (red snapper) and is described as ‘butterflied boneless whole fish, wood-grilled’ on the menu. It had amazing flavor but was light enough that I did not feel stuffed after eating it. My husband had the duck and raved about its taste. For sides, they had quite a few options to choose from. We decided to try the Camote a las Brasas or coal roasted sweet potatoes. The dish was drizzled with condensed milk at the bottom, but I was able to eat the potatoes without much of the milk and still enjoy the incredible flavor!

The ability to order many different items from the menu that are grilled, fresh or even raw makes healthy eating easier without compromising taste. And, the dishes had so much flavor just from the different herbs, spices and produce they incorporated!  Although the portions were large, I was able to take home half of my meal for leftovers the next day which allowed me to enjoy Caracol two days in a row!

I reached out to Caracol a few weeks ago to let them know of this blog post and how much we loved our meal. Without hesitation, they were very generous and donated a gift card for our first giveaway! I would love for a HBH foodie to experience Caracol and enjoy it as much as we did! Enter by following the prompts below (and then receive 1 entry each for following us on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest), and we will announce the winner this Friday (7/31). Good luck!
